Our annual VIPs
are the turtles, who come back here every year to nest
on our white sand beach, confiding the survival of their
young ones in us, and every year we are proud to be
a part of the Akumal Turtle Watch program and help in
protecting the nests and the young turtles that hatch
later in the season.
May through November is turtle nesting season for the
two main species, Loggerhead and Green, and Akumal is
a major nesting site. Turtles are shy animals so we
ask you to be quiet at night and turn off all outside
lights. If you want to walk the beach and admire these
ancient magnificent animals laying their eggs, please
do it with a qualified guide. The CEA offers nightly
turtle walks during nesting season. Please sign up at
the CEA or ask someone at the Las Villas office to call
them. Groups are limited to 10 people. You will be provided
with a red film to cover your light and the guide will
tell you when it is safe to get closer.
